Jetzt sieht man es. Gladiolen! Ich habe zwar keine eigenen im Garten (sie wirken mir in einem Beet zu steif), sondern hole sie mir jeweils auf den Blumenfeldern, wo sie seit ein paar Jahren von Bauern angepflanzt und verkauft werden. Bis jetzt gab es hier nur die „gew\u00f6hnlichen“ einfarbigen, diesen Sommer aber entdeckte ich auf dem Feld speziell sch\u00f6ne Exemplare. Und als ich in meiner RHS Pflanzenenzyklop\u00e4die nachschaute, konnte ich feststellen, dass es unter den nun gepfl\u00fcckten sogar pr\u00e4mierte Sorten hatte. Ich mag diese Blume eigentlich nur f\u00fcr Dekorationszwecke, weil sie relativ lange in der (Boden-)Vase h\u00e4lt (beinahe zwei Wochen) und z.B. auch noch die letzte Bl\u00fcte ohne St\u00e4ngel in eine Schale gelegt werden kann. Es sind die einzelnen Bl\u00fcten, die mich faszinieren…ihre schillernden Farben im ganzen Regenbogenspektrum.<\/p>\n

Now you can see…it is…gladiolus! I don’t grow them in my garden (I think they are too „stiff“ in a flowerbed arrangement) but I can get them from the big fields not far away from us, where farmers started some years ago to plant and sell different summer flowers. Up to now, you could buy just the common, simple colours. This year however, I discovered some very special specimen. And when I looked in my enzyclopedia, I was astounted to see that there were even some sorts that have been awarded. I like this flower only for decoration use inside, as the blooms stay fresh more than two weeks. But the single blooms are fascinating with the glowing colours. <\/font><\/p>\n

Die Gladiole ist eine Gattung in der Familie der Schwertliliengew\u00e4chse (iridaceae<\/em>), lat. gladius = Schwert. Die meisten in den G\u00e4rten gepflanzten und auf Blumenm\u00e4rkten als Schnittblume angebotenen Gladiolen sind Hybriden.<\/p>\n

The gladiolus is a genus of the iridaceae (and the name sword lily comes from the latin word gladius = sword). On the whole, all gladiolus you can find here in the gardens, as well as those offered as cut flowers on weekly flower markets are gladiolus hybrids.<\/font><\/p>\n

Meine Mutter pflanzte die Gladiolen w\u00e4hrend Jahren. Sie waren damals in fast jedem l\u00e4ndlichen Garten zu finden .Sie schnitt jeweils die oberste Knospe weg und dadurch liessen die Bl\u00fctenst\u00e4nde die K\u00f6pfe weniger h\u00e4ngen und hielten auch l\u00e4nger in der Vase.<\/p>\n

My mother planted gladiolus for years. At that time, it was quite normal to have them in a rural garden. I remember she used to cut the top bud, so the bloom would not be hanging but staying fresh for a longer time.
