A few weeks ago I found by accident a little book of pictures (also not very expensive) with the promising title „flora“ (Gardens and Plants in Art and Literature) by Edward Lucie-Smith. This lovely book explores flowers and gardens from a wide variety of societies and historical periods. And most of those works of art can be admired in museums and for this you’ll find a list on the back of the book. ISBN-10 0823018407 or ISBN-13 978-0823018406.

Another book, quite entertaining and interesting, is Val Bourne’s „Seeds of Wisdom„. It is a collection of seasonal hints and tips from the head gardeners of some of Britain’s most successful and beautiful gardens. Arranged by season, the book features a wealth of information about diverse topics that a gardener is interested in. And who doesn’t like to know the secrets (or at least some of them) of the professionals? ISBN 1 84403 021 0.

The last book is a very unusual gardening book and for all gardeners who like to stroll in the garden, experiencing it through the nose. The writer thinks of life and gardens beyond them in terms of smell. It is not smell isolated from other sensations, of course. „Led by the Nose“ (A Garden of Smells) by Jenny Joseph is based on personal experience in her garden during one years’s period. Apart from the poetic sensitivity that comes through in the details, we also get to know a helpful list of plants and when they smell.
