Bl\u00fchende Mimosen sah man oft an den Strassenr\u00e4ndern, wie das erste Bild zeigt.<br \/>\n<font color=\"#333399\">With some more snapshots I want to give a little impression of Portugals Southern coast, the Algarve in February.  Of course, the main interest in this gardenblog  concerns plants \ud83d\ude09 ! Blooming <em>mimosas <\/em>could often be discovered on the roadsides, as shown on the first picture.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/baroga.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscn9020.jpg\" class=\"thickbox no_icon\" title=\"dscn9020.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/baroga.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscn9020.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"dscn9020.jpg\" class=\"imageframe imgaligncenter\" height=\"270\" width=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ueberall bl\u00fchten auch die Mandelb\u00e4ume. Optisch glaubte man von weitem Schneefelder zu sehen. Bougainvilleas, Solanum in den verschiedensten Farben sowie Hibiskusarten haben wir ebenfalls entdeckt.<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#333399\">Everywhere,  there were almond trees in full bloom. Looking from a certain distance, one could believe seeing large snowfields. <em>Bougainvilleas, solanum<\/em> and some <em>hibiscus<\/em> sorts in various colours could be found too.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/baroga.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscn8977.jpg\" class=\"thickbox no_icon\" title=\"dscn8977.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/baroga.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscn8977.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"dscn8977.jpg\" class=\"imageframe imgaligncenter\" height=\"270\" width=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ab und zu am Strassenrand, diese Kaktusfeige. Sie ist essbar!<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#333399\">From time to time this sort of Indian fig grows on the roadside. Vielleicht eine portugiesische &#8222;Wegwarte&#8220; \ud83d\ude09 ?! Und erstmals  habe ich eine Zistrose  (<em>Cistus albidus<\/em>) in natura gesehen&#8230;.ebenfalls am Strassenrand! Die Bl\u00fcten wundersch\u00f6n und fein wie Seidenpapier.<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#333399\">A blue spot on the roadside. Is it perhaps a portugese chicory (cichorium intybus)? And for the first time in my life I saw a <em>cistus albidus<\/em> on the roadside too. Sogar in der Stadt (hier in der Altstadt von Faro) waren Orangenb\u00e4ume zu finden.<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#333399\">Orange groves full of ripe fruits lined the main roads. Even in town (here in the Old City of Faro) you could find these orangetrees. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span class=\"thickbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/baroga.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscn9008.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"dscn9008.jpg\" class=\"imageframe imgaligncenter\" height=\"360\" width=\"270\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/baroga.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscn9004.jpg\" class=\"thickbox no_icon\" title=\"dscn9004.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/baroga.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscn9004.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"dscn9004.jpg\" class=\"imageframe imgaligncenter\" height=\"270\" width=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In den verschiedenen St\u00e4dtchen (Faro, Tavira, Lagos) sind die &#8222;wichtigen&#8220; Flanierstrassen wundersch\u00f6n gepflastert.<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#333399\">In several little towns (Faro, Tavira, Lagos) we saw the shopping precinct with lovely paving stones.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/baroga.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscn8993.jpg\" class=\"thickbox no_icon\" title=\"dscn8993.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/baroga.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscn8993.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"dscn8993.jpg\" class=\"imageframe imgaligncenter\" height=\"360\" width=\"270\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dem morbiden Charme etwas vergessener Seitenstr\u00e4sschen, die wahrscheinlich Unmengen Geschichten erz\u00e4hlen k\u00f6nnten, kann man sich auch nicht ganz entziehen.<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#333399\">Even old and shabby small alleys may have a certain charm and could probably tell us a lot of stories.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/baroga.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscn9070.jpg\" class=\"thickbox no_icon\" title=\"dscn9070.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/baroga.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscn9070.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"dscn9070.jpg\" class=\"imageframe imgaligncenter\" height=\"270\" width=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/baroga.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscn9068.jpg\" class=\"thickbox no_icon\" title=\"dscn9068.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/baroga.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscn9068.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"dscn9068.jpg\" class=\"imageframe imgaligncenter\" height=\"270\" width=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Neben einer alten Kirche liegt ein kleiner versteckter Garten, der Aussicht auf die Stadt Lagos gew\u00e4hrt. Dass sich jemand um dieses kleine St\u00fcck Gr\u00fcn  etwas k\u00fcmmert, zeigt das mit Primeln bepflanzte Beet. Die &#8222;wichtigen&#8220;  und bekannten G\u00e4rten Portugals befinden sich jedoch in der Umgebung der St\u00e4dte Porto und Lissabon. Ausserdem sind die grossen G\u00e4rten eher von historischer denn g\u00e4rtnerischer Bedeutung.<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#333399\">Close to an old church we found a little hidden garden with view over the City of Lagos.<\/font> <font color=\"#333399\">Probably someone takes care of it, as we saw a flowerbed planted with fresh primulas. The &#8222;important&#8220; and well-known gardens in Portugal are in the surroundings of Porto and Lisbon. However, the big gardens are more important for historic than gardening aspects.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/baroga.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscn9018.jpg\" class=\"thickbox no_icon\" title=\"dscn9018.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/baroga.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscn9018.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"dscn9018.jpg\" class=\"imageframe imgaligncenter\" height=\"360\" width=\"238\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/baroga.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscn9073.jpg\" class=\"thickbox no_icon\" title=\"dscn9073.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/baroga.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscn9073.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"dscn9073.jpg\" class=\"imageframe imgaligncenter\" height=\"270\" width=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Allgegenw\u00e4rtig und charakteristisch f\u00fcr Portugal (eigentlich bis hin\u00fcber nach Andalusien) sind nat\u00fcrlich die Azulejos, diese kunstvoll bemalten Kacheln an Fassaden und in Innenr\u00e4umen. Die Tradition der meist blau-weiss-gelben Kachelbilder geht auf die arabischen Mauren zur\u00fcck. Al-zulayi bedeutet anscheinend &#8222;kleiner Stein&#8220;. Wir besuchten auch die Kirche Sao Loren\u00e7o die mit den sch\u00f6nsten Azulejos der Algarve geschm\u00fcckt ist und zwar vom Boden bis zur Decke. Leider konnte ich dort keine Aufnahmen machen.<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#333399\">Everywhere and typical for Portugal  (as well as for Andalusia, Spain) are the so-called &#8222;Azulejos&#8220;, tin-glazed, ceramic tilework.  They are to be found inside and outside churches, places, ordinary houses and even train stations. The tradition of those blue-white-yellow tiles goes back to the arabic Moors. Al-zulayi is the word for &#8222;little stone&#8220;. We also visited the famous church Sao Loren\u00e7o which is all covered with beautiful 18th century ceramic tiles, an outstanding example in the Algarve. Unfortunately I couldn&#8217;t take any pictures. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/baroga.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscn9079.jpg\" class=\"thickbox no_icon\" title=\"dscn9079.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/baroga.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscn9079.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"dscn9079.jpg\" class=\"imageframe imgaligncenter\" height=\"270\" width=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Moderne Baukunst vertr\u00e4gt sich wunderbar mit Altem. Hier der Hauptplatz in Tavira, dem kleinen Venedig der Algarve, wie viele Portugiesen liebevoll ihre Stadt nennen.<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#333399\">Modern architecture harmonizes quite well with old one. Above the main place in Tavira, the little &#8222;Venice&#8220; of the Algarve, as a lot of Portuguese people name her town. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/baroga.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscn9076.jpg\" class=\"thickbox no_icon\" title=\"dscn9076.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/baroga.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscn9076.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"dscn9076.jpg\" class=\"imageframe imgaligncenter\" height=\"360\" width=\"270\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/baroga.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscn8943.jpg\" class=\"thickbox no_icon\" title=\"dscn8943.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/baroga.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscn8943.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"dscn8943.jpg\" class=\"imageframe imgaligncenter\" height=\"270\" width=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hottentot Feige (<em>Carpobrotus edulis<\/em>) nicht nur in den D\u00fcnen, sondern auch mitten in der Stadt, an einer Strassenecke.<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#333399\">Hottentot fig (<em>Carpobrotus edulis<\/em>) can be found in town too&#8230;not only in the dunes. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/baroga.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscn9166.jpg\" class=\"thickbox no_icon\" title=\"dscn9166.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/baroga.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscn9166.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"dscn9166.jpg\" class=\"imageframe imgaligncenter\" height=\"270\" width=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Portugal und seine K\u00fcche! Mmmh! Viel Fisch, rustikale Eint\u00f6pfe und nicht zuletzt auch unschlagbare S\u00fcssigkeiten (und Kalorienbomben!). Dementsprechend hat es auch viele &#8222;Konditoreien&#8220;, sog. &#8222;Pastellerias&#8220;, welche die s\u00fcndhaft guten Kuchen und T\u00f6rtchen aus Zucker, Eier, Mandeln und Zimt verkaufen.<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#333399\">Food and wine in Portugal, just delicious! Dishes are heavily based on fish and seafood and there are, last but not least, wonderful sweets as pastries and cakes (packed with calories!) made of sugar, eggs, almonds and cinnamon. There are a lot of &#8222;tea rooms&#8220; called &#8222;Pastellerias&#8220; where you can get all these tempting delicacies.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/baroga.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscn9047.jpg\" class=\"thickbox no_icon\" title=\"dscn9047.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/baroga.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscn9047.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"dscn9047.jpg\" class=\"imageframe imgaligncenter\" height=\"232\" width=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/baroga.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscn9163.jpg\" class=\"thickbox no_icon\" title=\"dscn9163.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/baroga.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscn9163.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"dscn9163.jpg\" class=\"imageframe imgaligncenter\" height=\"186\" width=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Abends gab es meistens den obligaten Spaziergang am Meer&#8230;bei jedem Wetter. Diese Spazierg\u00e4nge im Sand (meistens waren wir ganz allein), der Geruch des Wassers,  sowie das Ger\u00e4usch der sich brechenden Wellen vermisse ich bereits&#8230;..<br \/>\nUnd als Souvenir &#8211; wie k\u00f6nnte es anders sein &#8211; habe ich  diesmal ein paar Stecklinge (in der Petflasche) mitgebracht, in der Hoffnung, dass vielleicht daraus mal kleine Pfl\u00e4nzchen werden und Einzug in meinen Garten finden.<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#333399\">Every evening we made our long walk on the beach.
